I spent the day grading exams. By the time dinner rolled around I was intellectually exhausted, so after eating I turned on the television. My mistake.
During the commercials they played a trailer for a new movie called “The Boss.” It’s a fictional account of the richest woman in the country who becomes involved with a girls' youth program visually structured along the lines of the Girl Scouts USA. One of the sight gags shown during the trailer was when the rich woman sucker-punched a pre-pubescent girl.
That’s neither funny nor acceptable. It glorifies child abuse. We do not live in a society where it’s permissible for the wealthy to abuse children. Neither do we live in a society where physical violence against women should be considered funny.
I’m writing to the TV station to request that they remove this offensive trailer from the public airwaves. Copy to the FCC. And I’m asking you all to join me in boycotting television stations that promote violence against women as a source of entertainment. Perhaps we should boycott television altogether.
Comedic tropes of physical violence against women need to be stopped, and they need to be stopped now. It's just not funny.
