My ultra-sweet class celebrated my birthday a day early by presenting me with Joel Sartore’s  book, Rare: Portraits of America’s Endangered Species. Now I have to give them all A’s, right?

For those unfamiliar with the work of National Geographic’s Joel Sartore, you should check out his galleries here:  http://www.joelsartore.com/galleries/.  I especially like his puma—one of the all-time great shots of a large cats, found here:  http://www.joelsartore.com/galleries/photo-ark-greatest-hits/84/.

Thank you, sweet students.  Now back to work!  (They’ve got a ten-page discourse analysis of Elizabeth Kolbert’s The Sixth Extinction due Thursday, but after that I'm giving them the summer off. )
